    SAN JOSE, Calif. — Trying to duplicate the success of its Centrino technology for mobile computers, Intel Corp. said Wednesday it will launch a desktop PC platform later this month geared specifically for businesses.

    The chip maker's Professional Business Platform will consist of a Pentium 4 processor but will also include features that simplify system management, enhance security and decrease power requirements, said Laura Anderson, an Intel spokeswoman.

    As expected the new line-up takes the dual-processor tower systems to 2.7GHz, with each chip running across a 1.35GHz frontside bus and sporting 512KB of L2 cache. Other two-way machines are clocked at 2.3GHz and 2GHz, with 1.15GHz and 1GHz FSBs, respectively.

    With the iMac G5, Apple has pared the desktop computer down to little more than the parts that people look at and touch -- keyboard, screen and mouse.

    Where the now-discontinued iMac G4 consisted of an LCD attached by a metal arm to a hemispherical base, the new iMac is all screen. Every internal component, from the DVD drive to the power adapter, has been fitted into the back of the display, which pivots slightly atop a "foot" made from a single slab of aluminum.
